The Lorax ~ Dr. Seuss

The LoraxThe Lorax by Dr. Seuss

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Every time I read this book I cannot help but marvel at how well the movie portrayed the very essence found between the pages. I cry every time I watch the movie and I cry when I read the book. I like to think that the rhyming words are soothing to my son’s ears and that they lull him into a calmness that readies him for sleep.

Harold and the Purple Crayon

Harold and the Purple CrayonHarold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson

I was super excited to discover that my son absolutely loves this book! I kind of expected him not to like it because it is so simple, but as soon as I was done he shouted “Again, Mom!” Silly kid makes me melt. And there I was thinking that the kid wasn’t paying attention! What I personally love about this book is the the beautiful imagination it must have taken to come up with it. It’s not hard to see how this book has remained popular for so long.

Izzy the Inventor ~ Emlyn Chand

17927335My Noah Pet got two nasty trampoline burns on his feet earlier today and was feeling very sorry for himself so I decided to tuck him into my bed and read him a story. Of course while trying to decide which story to read I remembered that I promised my friend Emlyn that I would read her Izzy book AGES ago and that I am a terrible terrible terrible friend for forgetting. I hauled it out and settled to cuddle with my little man. Of course he was not impressed…but that is because he was feeling massively sorry for himself and more interested in sulking that stories, so I just read it to myself and let him fall asleep without being offended. A sweet little story poem about reading. I love the illustrations too and I must admit that I often buy books just because I think the illustrations are pretty. I have now started downloading children’s books onto my ipad because I am hoping that my son might prefer them to real books. Sadly I can’t get the kid to show any interest in the gorgeous books in his bedroom! But maybe he’ll like them if he can turn the pages by swiping his finger over the touch screen!

Queen Emily’s Enchanted Kingdom ~ Lee Ann Graff-Vinson

Queen Emily’s Enchanted Kingdom Sugarland by Lee-Ann Graff-Vinson

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A sweet story about a Queen whose kingdom is overrun by sweets. I imagine it serves as a nice reminder to children about “treats” and think it’s kind of cute that the author got her daughter to illustrate the book. the only thing I might have done differently is have at least one character exercising a bit of wisdom throughout the story. Although I suppose the unicorn did try to warn the queen about indulging too much. Perhaps if Stargazer had been a little bit more vocal? just to get the point across a little bit harder…

What a delightful little book! Another one that I just picked up at a second hand book sale but so precious. It’s written in exactly the way I like children’s books to be written and now I’m feeling really inspired to actually write some similar stories. Absolutely fantastic read!

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I got this book from a second hand store this morning. I kind of liked the idea that the poor kid’s name was Treehorn. It’s a rather random and slightly bizarre book. Not sure kids would actually get the point of the story but it speaks volumes to an adult.

Honey the Hero ~ Emlyn Chand

Honey the HeroHoney the Hero by Emlyn Chand

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Honey the Hero is a sweet book about a parakeet who tries to be a superhero. I must admit that while I absolutely love my e-reader for regular novels I definitely don’t like it for kids books. It seems odd not to have real paper in my hands when reading for kids. Otherwise the book is one of those books that will likely illicit a giggle or two from your six year old. I’m not nuts about the art work. I’ve always been one who loves more old fashioned illustrations.

I love this book and don’t think that I read it as a child. I bought it the other day for my kid and now that I’ve read it (to myself more than to him!) I am very eager for the movie to come out. The message is so important and I think as a movie it will certainly reach a wider audience. Will definitely be taking mini-me to go and see it :)
